Current Activity

- The Dauntless Project has been on hold as I stumbled between other major projects trying to to solve a late-in-life crisis. Being over the "standard" retirement age but still working, I was searching for an Idea on how to turn a hobby into a profitable business. Building a model boat didn't qualify.
- My primary employer "retired" me in early 2015 so now I have time to pursue other projects of interest.

About The Editor

Dan Kautz (think “Ca-outs” in single syllable) has a wide variety of creative interests, as he likes to say, “…probably too many.” At the bottom of this article is a table of links to other web sites and blogs where Dan expresses his opinions and information on many subjects, available to anyone who wants to read.

Dan, a baby boomer born late in 1946 is still actively employed in a full time occupation that is concentrated on implementing energy control measures in large buildings. This is accomplished through replacement of inefficient energy consuming equipment and implementing proper operational management. He works within the construction area which is the hands on portion of fulfilling energy savings opportunities. This involves the implementation of actual corrective action and not the theoretical babble from politicians and news media.

So “hands on” is Dan’s preferred mode of operation, making him “results oriented.” In that light, this blog is not just a discussion of remote control of a marine vessel. This site is all about getting it done with real operating hardware and application of the concept. Yes, the application is for a model but the the process is scalable to any size vessel.

Dan has many finely honed manual skills and has available for his use, a complete personal machine shop and wood working shop.

Applied electronics and then later computers, have been a big part of his interest and creative efforts for over 50 years. Dan has been a licensed amateur radio operator (W5EHS) since 1969 and a life member of the ARRL (American Radio Relay League).

Dan is a licensed aircraft pilot and a builder of full size light aircraft. He is a past chapter president (#210) and member of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association.) He has built and flown model aircraft for over 50 years and is a long time member of the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) #51653.

Somewhere in there he has built several radio controlled model boats.

Model trains have always been a passion too. He has a ¾ inch scale, coal burning live steam engine under construction.

After 20+ years of enduring a disease called CMT Peripheral Neuropathy, which is slowly reducing his strength and mobility (he must now use a cane most all of the time), Dan is getting active with scale model boat construction. It doesn’t hurt (literally) that he has access to a small lake (more like a pond) very close adjoining the back of his property. Operating boat activities can be handled while sitting on a folding chair or bench.

Not satisfied with just normal Radio Control as in the past, he is taking on additional challenge with creating the RCS – Remote Conning System with two way communication with the model.
